Ear Candles

Okay, so they were selling these things called 'ear candles' at Cornucopia, and I decided to try them. They're supposed to suck the fluids and excess ear wax out of your ears.

I look like a birthday cake.

Here's all the wax that came out of one of my ears.

Cool, eh?

Madeleine, yes, I think it is cool that you can get that stuff out of your ears, but did you have to show it to us? Very disgusting.

that was cool, but I am skeptical. you should try the candle NOT in your ear and see if stuff still "comes out". because i don't think there is that much crap in there... Did you feel suction? why can't you do the same thing with a squeeze bulb?

I did feel the suction. I guess that I could use a squeeze bulb, but it lasted for several minutes, and it did help get fluidy stuff out of my ears.

Ear candles are generally considered to be dangerous (due to the hot wax) and ineffective.

This study found that they generated no suction and didn't remove any wax from the ear. These guys tried burning one candle in the ear and one out of it and found the same amount of brown wax in the control candle as the ear one.
